Occur/Happen/Arise

발생하다. 일어나다. Take place. 모두 같은뜻 같은데 약간의 뉘앙스 차이가 있는듯 하다.

 

(1) Occur : (somewhat formal) to happen

(2) Happen : to take place especially without being planned, occur

>> 영영사전에서의 정의인데 사실상 둘은 같다고 보면 되시겠다. 다만 둘다 특정 목적이나 원인따위는 없이 그냥 발생하는것.

 

ex) The accident that occurred to me last night was like a nightmare.

ex) The accident that happend to me last night was like a nightmare.

 

(3) arise : (영영) to begin to occur or to exist.

(ChatGPT) refers to something coming into existence or becoming apparent as a result of circumstances or conditions. It often implies a more deliberate or indirect cause.

>> 발생하기는 하는데 좀더 원인, 의도가 있어서 발생하는 느낌이다.

 

ex) Children should be disciplined when the need arises.

ex) A storm arose during the night.

 

사실 arise는 잘 모르겠다... 영영 사전의 설명이 좀더들어 맞는것 같기도 하고... begin to occur .. 발생하기 시작하다.

참고로 phrasal verb인 "come about"을 arise, occur를 대신해서 쓰기도 한다.
