Fit, Align With, Suit, Match

잘 어울린다. 맞다. 부합하다....

A가 B에 뭔가 잘 융화되거나 딱 맞아 떨어지면 우리는 위와 같은 표현을 쓰는데,

영어로는 Fit, Align With, Suit, Match 등을 쓰는듯 하다. 문제는 언제 각각의 단어를 써야할지 참 어렵다는것...

 

(1) Fit 

[한영] (모양·크기가 어떤 사람·사물에) 맞다, (어느 장소에 들어가기에) 맞다

[영영] to be the right size and shape for (someone or something), to go into or through a particular space

 

영영사전이나 한영사전 모두 같이 표현되어 있다. A의 크기, 모양등이 B에 딱 맞다. 정도가 될듯 한데 문제는 이게 비유적으로도 쓰인다는것...

 

<모양, 크기와 관련된 예시>

[예시] The new shoes don't fit me at all (주어 + fit + 목적어)

[예시] He struggled to fit the large sofa through the narrow doorway. (주어 + fit + 목적어 + 전치사 + 장소)
[예시] She couldn't fit all of her belongings into the suitcase. (주어 + fit + 목적어 + 전치사 + 장소)
[예시] The puzzle pieces fit together perfectly. (주어 + fit)

 

<적합하다=suitable 의 표현으로 쓰인 예시>

[예시] The movie fits for the family. [예시] The water is not fit for drink.

 

(2) Suit

[한영] (…에게) 편리하다[맞다/괜찮다], 어울리다

[영영] to be proper or suitable for (someone or something), to provide what is required or wanted by or for (someone or something)

 

영영사전의 정의가 더 깔끔한듯 하다. 적합하고 어울리고, 누구에겐가 (뭔가 하기에) 괜찮고 좋은.Fit의 은유적 표현이 Suit에 가까운듯 하다.

 

[예시] Your new hairstyle suits you.
[예시] This program should suit your needs. = This program should fit your needs
[예시] This kind of behavior hardly suits a person of your age.

 

(3) Match (이 단어는 명사로도 여러 뜻이 있고 동사로도 아주 많은 뜻이 있는데, fit, suit과 겹치는 의미만 다루겠다.)

 

[한영] 어울리다, (색깔·무늬·스타일이 서로) 맞다, 일치하다, 아주 비슷하다, (관련 있거나 비슷한 것을) 연결시키다

[영영] to go well with (someone or something), to make or see a connection or relationship between (two people or things), to be in agreement with (something)

 

Match는 독립된 두 개가 있는데 서로가 하나의 선으로 "연결되어 있거나" 일부러 "연결 시키는" 행위와 관련된 단어인듯 하다.

예를 들어, 두 남여가 잘 어울리고, 커튼이 거실 분위기에 잘 어울리고(맞고), 그사람의 지문이 범죄현장에서 찾은거랑 딱 맞는 이런 상황!!!!

 

[예시] The doors were painted blue to match the walls.
[예시] Her fingerprints match those found at the scene of the crime. 
[예시] The aim of the competition is to match the quote to the person who said it.

 

 

(4) Align with 

 

마지막으로 align with는 숙어로 한영사전에는 자세히 안나와 있어서 이것 처것 찾아보니 "(목적 등에) 부합하다"로 생각하면 될듯?
