Certify / Verify / Confirm

뭔가 입증하고 증명하고 확인해주는 느낌의 단어인데 뉘앙스가 어떻게 다른지 궁금했다. 항상.

 

Verify : To confirm the accuracy, truth, or authenticity of something by careful examination or investigation.

 

Certify : To formally attest (show or prove) to the truth, accuracy, or authenticity of something. 

Confirm : To establish the truth, accuracy, or validity of something that was previously uncertain or unverified. 

 

먼저 Confirm은 어떤 사건, 일, 결과 등이 사실임을 확인시켜주고 보여주는 것.

ex) He confirmed that the rumor about his affair was not true.

 

다음으로 Verify는 조사나 평가등을 통해 (정확성, 진실, 진위 여부) 확인 시켜 주는것.

ex) In order to verify the authenticity of the painting, more than 10 investigators have been involved in this project.

 

마지막으로 Certify는 (정확성, 진실, 진위 여부) 등을 증명해 주는것 또는 확인해/보여주는 것.

ex) The institute certified that the painting is a fraud

기본적으로 Confirm은 사실인지 알려주고 보여주며, 확인해 주는 행위이고,

Verify와 Certify는 (정확성, 진실, 진위 여부)를 확인해주는 행위 이다. 그러나 Certify는 보통 서류와 연관되어 많이 쓰인다. 예를 들어, Cetificate은 확인해주는 '서류'이나 Verification은 확인하는 '행위'이다. 즉 Certify는 서면 등과 같은 공식적인 자료가 남는 확인해주는 행위라 생각하면 되겠다.
