Oppress, Disregard, Disrespect, Look down on, Persecute

탄압, 무시, 멸시, 경멸 하다.. 사실 우리도 각각의 단어가 정확히 어떻게 다른지 모른채,

그동안 뉘앙스만으로 사용해오고 있었다. 그러기에 각각의 단어를 한영 사전을 통해 찾아 봤자 언제 어떻게 써야할지 

깨우칠 수가 없다.

 

1) Oppress : (한영) 탄압하다. (영영) to treat (a person or group of people) in a cruel or unfair way 

>> 힘, 권위 등을 이용해 사람들을 억압하고 가혹하게 대하는것. 주로 독재자들이 민간인을 탄압한다던지로 쓰인다.

 

ex) The country has long been oppressed by a ruthless dictator.

 

2) Disregard : do not pay attention to

>> 그냥 관심도 주지 않는것. 무시하는것.

 

ex) I teach my son to disregard bullies and to tell teachers about what is happening when he encounters those situations.

 

3) Disrespect : (한영) 무례하게 말하다/행동하다. (영영)  to say or do something that shows a lack of respect for someone and something

>> (한영)에서 쓰여있듯 무례하게 말하거나 행동하는것.

 

ex) She has disrespected him over the past few months.

 

4) Look down on : (영영) to think of  or treat (someone or something) as unimportant or not worthy of respect

>> 업신 여기다.

 

 

ex) Hinduism has been looked down on in Islam countries and vice versa.

 

5) Persecute : (한영) 인종, 종교, 정치적인 이유로 박해하다. (영영) to treat (someone) cruelly or unfairly especially because of race or religious or poicial beliefs. 

 

ex) Muslims have been persecuted in many Christian countries.
